11 White Variegated Houseplants To Add To Your Plant Collection

Plants that have variegation in their leaves add interest to a houseplant collection. There are a lot of variegated houseplants available – some that have shades of cream, or yellow, light green, pink, purple, or red – to name a few. Some plants – like the ones featured here – have a stark white variegation that makes these plants really stand out.

Nestle a white-variegated plant among your other houseplants to add texture and interest to your display.

Some of the plants shown here are very affordable, others are harder to find and are therefore more expensive. Many of these plants can be purchased locally at your favorite greenhouse, or you can find them through online plant shops.  I’ve included information links to online shops for each plant – the plants were all available at the time of writing. I only included links to online shops I have personally used and have been very happy with.

Dracaena deremensis ‘White Jewel’

The White Jewel is a stunning plant in any houseplant collection. The long slender leaves of dark green are punctuated with white stripes, making this plant a perfect focal plant.

The plant is easy to care for. Water on a regular schedule when the soil is dry – about every 7-10 days. Water well and allow the soil to drain to prevent prolonged water on the roots. The White Jewel prefers bright indirect light, but can also do well in more shady conditions. A west or east-facing window will make the plant feel right at home. The plant does prefer a more humid environment, but can also do well in drier air. Using a pebble tray of water beneath this plant can help increase the humidity around it.

You can buy this plant at California Tropicals for $16.99 in a 4-inch pot.

Epipremnum aureum Pothos ‘N ‘Joy’

The N’Joy pothos is a vining plant with very interesting white variegated leaves. The leaves tend to be fairly small, but the vines can reach very long lengths over time. The plant looks good in a hanging basket or on a high shelf.

N’Joy Pothos are very easy to care for and will grow in practically any light condition – from low light to bright indirect light. In lower light conditions, some of the variegation might fade, so for optimum variegation, bright indirect light works best. Water when the top 1-2″ of soil is dry and allow water to drain well. This plant isn’t picky about humidity requirements – it will grow in pretty much any home environment.

The pointy leaves are dotted with splashes of white, commanding attention. This plant is easy to grow and care for and makes a really nice focal plant. The plant has a mounded shape so can be used on a shelf, plant stand, or even in a hanging basket. Smaller plants also look great in terrariums. They prefer bright indirect light and consistent temperatures. Best to keep them away from cold drafts or heat registers. They tend to grow best with higher humidity but grow well on a pebble tray of water as well.

Calathea lietzei ‘White Fusion’

The Calathea White Fusion is simply a gorgeous plant! The top part of the leaves have white markings along with various shades of green, while the underside of the leaves have a light purple-pinkish hue. Just stunning!

This plant can be a little more difficult to grow and care for than some of the other plants listed here, but once you figure this plant out, it will grow quickly and be a treasured plant among your other plants.

The White Fusion likes moisture, but not too much. It likes bright light, but not too much. It is also sensitive to changes in temperatures, so best kept where the temperature doesn’t fluctuate – much. Bright filtered light is best for this plant. Keep the soil consistently moist, but not soggy. Water well and allow water to drain for best results. Water free of chemicals works best for this plant – try rainwater or distilled water that is at room temperature. A pebble tray will help increase humidity around the plant.

Ficus pumila variegata ‘Creeping Fig’

The Creeping Fig is such an interesting plant. The leaves have a white variegated edge around dark green and they are very small. The plant can climb or be allowed to vine and hang down – perfect for a hanging basket or high shelf. Because this plant is so small, it also works well in a terrarium.

The Creeping Fig prefers lots of medium to bright indirect light. Water the plant when the top inch of soil is dry. Make sure not to let this plant dry out too much, as it will lose leaves when too dry. The plant prefers higher humidity levels in order to keep the leaves from getting crispy. Placing the plant on a pebble tray will help increase the humidity. The Creeping Fig does not like cold drafts, so make sure to keep it away from windows, doors, and air conditioning vents.

Philodendron ‘Birkin’

The Philodendron Birkin is a much-sought-after plant. One look at the white variegation and you can see why!

The leaves of the Birkin are about 4 inches long and no two leaves on the plant are the same. This plant looks striking against other houseplants and makes a fun focal plant.

The Philodendron Birkin is an easy plant to grow and care for. Make sure to keep the plant watered on a regular schedule, as underwatering can cause the leaves to droop and overwatering can cause the roots to rot. A well-draining soil is best for this plant. The Birkin can grow in low light conditions, but the variegation will be brighter if grown in bright indirect light. A west- or south-facing window is best for this plant, but avoid direct sunlight. The Birkin does like higher humidity levels than a typical home environment, and this can be accomplished with a pebble tray beneath the plant.

This trendy Ficus plant has thick waxy triangular shaped leaves that are variegated with a creamy white among dark green. The plant can reach 6-feet tall, but when it’s young, it looks perfect alongside other houseplants.

This plant does best in bright indirect light – the more light, the better. It can be placed in a south-facing window of direct sunlight for several hours a day, with no harm to the plant. Water on a regular schedule when the top two inches of soil are dry. The plant does prefer a bit more humidity than some plants, but like others in this list, a pebble tray will help increase the humidity around the plant. Like other Ficus plants, this one doesn’t like to be moved from one environment to another, and it doesn’t like changes in temperature. Make sure to place it somewhere out of drafts or heat.

This plant has large lush leaves that have green and white marbling variegation – they really are pretty! The Domino produces white flowers that add to the allure of this plant.

This plant is easy to grow and care for. It thrives in soil that remains slightly moist, so water it often and don’t allow it to dry out. Make sure the soil drains well after watering so the soil isn’t soggy. The leaves will droop when dry, but will bounce back once watered. The Domino prefers bright indirect light, but can also grow in lower light conditions – just with less blooms. Avoid direct sunlight, as too much light will burn the leaves.

This plant can be a little tricky to grow. Make sure to keep the soil slightly moist, but not soggy. Don’t allow this plant to dry out. The Fittonia also prefers high humidity, so keeping it in a more humid location or on a pebble tray of water will help. Misting the leaves every day will also help raise the humidity.
