What I’m Reading

Every so often, a book surprises you – not because it fits your usual taste, but because it doesn’t. Those unexpected reads can end up meaning the most. That was my experience with “When Lemons Give You Life” by Anna Johnston.

I didn’t know much about the book “The Unmaking of June Farrow” by Adrienne Young when I decided to read it, and I ended up being completely surprised by how much I enjoyed it.

What would you do if you woke up one morning and discovered that everything you thought you knew about the world had suddenly changed?

I’ve found myself thinking about “The Things We Never Say” by Elizabeth Strout on and off for the past couple of days since finishing this book, trying to decide whether I liked it or disliked it. My first reaction after turning the last page was, “Good grief…how is this book rated so highly?” That may sound harsh, but hear me out.

There are authors whose books you enjoy. And then there are authors whose books become part of your life. For me, Dean Koontz falls squarely into that second category. He is one of my most favorite authors.

Sometimes the books we choose based solely on a cover end up becoming unexpected favorites. And sometimes… they leave us sitting on the deck staring into space, wondering what exactly we just read. That was my experience with “Breathing Lessons” by Anne Tyler.

I just finished reading “The Astral Library” by Kate Quinn, and I have to admit – I’m feeling a bit conflicted about it.

With all the hype surrounding this book, I fully expected to love it – even though fantasy isn’t typically my genre of choice. I wouldn’t say the book was bad by any means. In fact, I can understand why many readers enjoy it. For me, though, it was simply… okay.

As part of a summer reading challenge I created for myself, I needed a book for the “Random Pick” challenge category. When I say random – I mean RANDOM. I stood in front of the bookshelf at a thrift store, closed my eyes, reached out, and pulled out a book.

If you love thrillers that keep you guessing until the very end, then the book “We Are All Guilty Here” by Karin Slaughter is definitely worth picking up!

I have officially discovered that stepping outside my usual reading genres can lead to some unexpectedly delightful surprises – and The Road to Tender Hearts was absolutely one of them!

Sometimes a book title grabs hold of your curiosity and refuses to let go – that’s what happened to me with “The Borrowed Life of Frederick Fife”.
