DIY: Make Rolodex Card Collage Art

Did you know that March is National Craft Month?! Yay!

I am determined to do at least one craft a day throughout the month of March. I love creating and trying new things, so this is going to be a really FUN month!

Today I’m making mini collages.

Rolodex Card Collage Art

Today was all about expressing myself.

I absolutely LOVE collage art. I find it incredibly relaxing to page through old magazines, looking for just the right word or just the right image. Using a scissor to cut out these elements is also very hands-on relaxing.

When I page through a magazine, I don’t usually have a concept in mind for a piece – I just follow my imagination and the end result is always something interesting.

I create collages on a number of different things – from canvas to cardstock, playing cards to greeting cards – there’s always something fun to work with. When I’m short on time, I like to create collages on small cards – just little works of art. I found a vintage Rolodex card holder years ago that still had a bunch of blank (and yellowed) cards in it. I removed the alphabet cards, and now use this Rolodex to hold my mini collage cards. I place the Rolodex on my desk, and can flip to any card to suit my mood. This Rolodex card holder is one of my most favorite ways to hold my collages.

I only did a few cards today because of a crazy schedule, but I’m already looking forward to creating more.

What You Will Need:

  • Small Cards
  • Glue Stick (my favorite brand is Avery)
  • Scissors
  • Old Magazines
  • Vintage Rolodex Card File (optional – but way cool)

What You Do:

  1. Take your time and page through old magazines, looking for words, phrases, or images that call out to you, then use a scissor to cut out these elements
I use old DVD cases to hold the things I cut out – helps to keep them all contained.
  2. When you have enough pieces to start, glue a background onto your card as a starting point (optional)
  3. One by one, use a glue stick to glue down the elements you selected – either carefully aligning these elements, or randomly placing them
  4. Continue working on your card until you’re satisfied with the end result
TIP: I usually work on multiple cards at the same time. As I start working, themes develop so I like having multiple cards for the different themes. The images below are of some of the cards I’m currently working on – they are still a ‘work-in-progress’.
  5. When your cards are done, save them in a stack on your desk so you can randomly look at them each day when working, or place the cards in a vintage Rolodex card file

Additional Tips:

  • Trade with Friends – If your friends would like to try these mini collages, you could trade your finished cards with each other. It’s a fun way to admire each other’s style and imagination. If you don’t live near your friends, you can always mail the cards back and forth for your trade.

I hope you enjoyed this project! Make sure to check back tomorrow to see what I’ll be working on.
