Stitch Fix – My Love / Hate Relationship (and a $25 Credit You Can Spend Right Away)

I’ve been using Stitch Fix now for three years. It has been a “love – hate” relationship. Mostly, a “love” relationship, but there have been a few boxes filled with duds.

In this article, I’ll share my experience with you, along with some of the pieces that I absolutely love. I’ll also give you tips on how you can get the best experience using Stitch Fix.

You can read about my first experience at My First Stitch Fix Box.  And be sure to see the bottom of this article for a $25 code you can spend at Stitch Fix.

Love

One of the things I love about Stitch Fix is that it really is for everyone! Women, men, and children. AND, it’s for all sizes of people. I am a middle-aged woman (UGH! Did I really just admit that?!), but I have the soul and spirit of a 20-year old and I wear what I like – what I feel good in. Clothes that fit my personality, as much as they fit my (current) plus-size body (another UGH!). Stitch Fix has me covered – both in style and in size. And speaking of size, I am really amazed that a good 95% of all the things I’ve tried on through Stitch Fix, have fit me like a glove. How they manage that, is a mystery to me. I used to hate shopping for clothes – trying things on, only to be disappointed again and again and again. I don’t have that issue with Stitch Fix – and I love that!

While Stitch Fix offers a wide range of clothing and accessory options, I tend to stick to jeans, blouses, t-shirts, hoodies, and jackets. Here are some of my favorites.

Jeans – I loved wearing jeans when I was a teenager and young adult. But as I got older, and my body changed, jeans were not my best friend. It was HARD to find jeans that fit right, were comfortable, AND looked good on me. Because of this, I gave up on jeans for a long time. Enter Stitch Fix. When I received my first pair of jeans in one of my Stitch Fix boxes, my initial reaction was “UGH! Why did they send me jeans?!”. But, being the adventurer that I am (LOL), I tried them on, and… Oh my goodness! They FIT! And not only did they fit, they were COMFORTABLE! And, most importantly, they looked GOOD on me! It was like a clothing genie granted me a wish! I’ve worn that first pair of jeans a LOT since I first got them. And, I have found at least a dozen other pairs of jeans that fit, are comfortable, and look great as well. Here are some of my most favorite high-waisted jeans.

Blouses – Since I work at home, I’m more of a t-shirt kind of gal than one who wears blouses. But I wasn’t always like that, and definitely appreciate a nice blouse. Some of the blouses I’ve gotten from Stitch Fix are amazing! I can wear them for casual outings and even for more formal affairs. They look great with jeans, nice leggings, and slacks. I’ve been very impressed by the fabric and quality of the blouses I’ve purchased. They just feel good to wear! Here are some of my favs.

T-Shirts and Hoodies – I know. You can buy comfortable t-shirts and hoodies practically anywhere. But the ones I have purchased from Stitch Fix feel so luxurious, and are a much better quality than what I find elsewhere. The fit of these pieces, as with the other items of clothing I’ve mentioned, feels like it was made just for me. I especially love the tunic t-shirts!

Jackets – A fun jacket can really make an outfit! I love the look of a casual jacket, and I especially like cropped jackets or jackets that have interesting features. The jackets I’ve purchased from Stitch Fix are my all-time favorites. As a matter of fact, it’s sometimes hard to decide which jacket to wear – I like them all (and have a particularly strong affinity to my olive green jacket). I have a high waistline and a large chest, so finding jackets that actually fit me has never been easy. Normally, if I find a jacket that fits in the chest, it’s way too large everywhere else. This is not the case with the jackets I’ve gotten from Stitch Fix. It’s as if these jackets were custom-made for my body style, and I couldn’t be more pleased with them!

Hate

Unfortunately, sometimes a stylist completely misses the mark and gives you things you would never dream of wearing. When this happens, you just have to have great communication with your stylist to prevent future duds from arriving. Here are some of the worst pieces I’ve received – and sent back immediately. (NOTE: While someone might love these pieces, they are just not my style.)

The One That Got Away

We’ve all had it happen. We find a piece of clothing that is not typically our style, but we try it anyway. And fall in love with it. But then we see the price tag and have to reassess just how much we love it. We go back and forth in our head as we stand in front of the mirror – feeling great wearing the item, but knowing it’s more than you’d normally spend on something so different than what you usually wear. The little voice inside your head runs wild – “Will you ever wear it again?”, “Just think what else you could buy with the price of this item!”, “Do you really need another {insert item name here]?”. Then, after modeling the item for a while, you decide to let it go. But it isn’t easy. You really felt great wearing that item and liked wearing something that was outside of your comfort zone. But… that nagging voice in your head insists you let it go. So you do. And when it’s gone, it’s all you can think about. You want it back! You should have made a different choice! But now it’s too late. It’s no longer available, and likely never will be again. Time to let that obsession go…

This exact scenario happened to me with this Stitch Fix blouse. I should have known better… I’m a vintage retailer! I sell one-of-a-kind vintage pieces in my shop, for crying out loud! I KNOW that when you see something special, you DON’T LET IT GO! You nab that baby up right there on the spot, because you know it will probably never pass your way again.

TIP: Don’t let this happen to you. If you see something special on Stitch Fix – buy it! Treat yourself! No regrets.

Tips

  • Customize Your Profile (and specify a price range) – The key to receiving items that fit you perfectly, and that are your complimentary colors and style, is to add as much information as possible to your Stitch Fix Style Profile. Just click on your name in the upper-right corner of your Stitch Fix window and choose Style Profile. Fill in ALL the details there, along with details in the Profile Note section. To keep your fixes within budget, make sure to also fill in the Price Preferences section.
  • Add to Your Favorites – Go to the Stitch Fix Freestyle page and browse through the customized items you’ll see in each category. When you find something you love but aren’t ready to purchase, click the Save icon in the upper right corner of that item. You can review your Saved items by clicking the Saved menu in the header of the window. You’re stylist also has access to your Saved items, so can use them to better style you.
  • Create a Pinterest Board and Share It –  If you use Pinterest, make sure to create a Clothing Inspiration Board there and keep it current. Pin clothing to it that you see on Pinterest or from your favorite stores. Add a link to your Pinterest board in your Style Profile, so your stylist can use that board for inspiration when choosing items for your next box. Here’s a link to my Pinterest board – follow me for updates!
  • Add Notes for Your Stylist – Each time you request a Stitch Fix box, make sure to include a note to your stylist to let them know the kinds of things you’re looking for. For example, you could write a note “Looking for high-waisted distressed jeans and white boho peasant blouses for Summer. Dislike anything with no sleeves.” The more detailed you can make these notes, the better your results will be.
  • Play the Daily Style Shuffle – If you visit the Stitch Fix website on a regular basis, or use the app on your phone, I highly recommend you play the Style Shuffle. You’ll be presented with different items that you can either ‘thumbs up’ or ‘thumb down’ to what you’d wear or wouldn’t wear. Your stylist can use this information to help make your box better for you.
  • Shop Freestyle – Some months, I skip a styled box and I just find things I like by shopping the Freestyle categories. Just go to the Freestyle menu when you’re logged in to the Stitch Fix website, and browse by category.
