There are authors whose books you enjoy. And then there are authors whose books become part of your life. For me, Dean Koontz falls squarely into that second category. He is one of my most favorite authors.
Ever since I discovered his writing, I’ve read every book he’s written (at least so far). I’ve loved some of his books more than others, but I’ve never read a Dean Koontz book that I didn’t enjoy. His stories have always had a way of pulling me in, introducing unforgettable characters, and taking me on journeys I wouldn’t have imagined.
When I came across “The Friend of the Family“, I didn’t hesitate. It immediately found a place on my bookshelf and my ever-growing “to-be-read” pile. I didn’t know anything about the story – one of my favorite things about reading is opening a book with absolutely no expectations and letting the story unfold naturally. I knew only one thing going in – this book was written by Dean Koontz, and that was enough for me.
Ironically, this became the first Dean Koontz novel that almost defeated me. After the first couple of chapters, I found myself struggling to connect with it. It felt completely different from anything I’d read by him before. I couldn’t quite settle into the story, and for the first time ever, I wondered if this might be the first Dean Koontz book I simply wouldn’t finish. So I did something I almost never do – I put this book back on the shelf. For six months. Yikes!
Maybe it was my frame of mind. Maybe it was the era in which the story takes place. Maybe I simply wasn’t ready for the kind of story it was trying to tell. Whatever the reason, it just wasn’t the right book for me at that moment.
Then a reading challenge came along, nudging me to pick it up again. I’m so incredibly glad it did! Somewhere along the way, something changed. Or perhaps I changed.
This isn’t the Dean Koontz many readers expect. If you’re looking for relentless suspense, supernatural mysteries, or edge-of-your-seat thrills, you’ll quickly realize this story walks a very different path. But once I accepted the book for what it wanted to be instead of expecting it to be something else, I completely fell in love with it. In fact, I think it may now be one of my favorite Dean Koontz novels.
The characters are what make this story extraordinary. They don’t simply exist on the page – they become people you want to know. People you want to spend time with. Before long, I found myself wishing I could pull up a chair at their table, listen to their conversations, laugh along with them, and somehow become part of their family.
And those conversations… They’re unlike anything you hear today. The dialogue is witty, imaginative, thoughtful, and wonderfully eloquent. The characters speak with warmth, humor, and intelligence in a way that feels almost timeless. More than once, I caught myself thinking, Why don’t people talk like this anymore?
There is such genuine affection woven into their relationships that the story becomes about much more than whatever happens in the plot. It’s about family. Friendship. Loyalty. Kindness. The simple joy of belonging somewhere. Those are the kinds of stories that stay with you.
I found myself thinking about these characters throughout the day whenever I wasn’t reading. They lingered in my thoughts as though they were real people whose lives continued after I closed the book each evening. I looked forward to picking it back up – not because I needed to know what happened next, but because I wanted to spend more time with them. That’s a rare gift.
When I reached the final page, I wasn’t ready to say goodbye. The very first thought that came to mind was simply… Wow. Not because of a shocking ending or an unbelievable twist. But because of how deeply the story had quietly worked its way into my heart.
I think sometimes the stories we resist at first become the ones we treasure most. Sometimes all a book asks of us is patience and an open mind, a willingness to trust the journey.
If you’ve never read this book, I hope you’ll pick it up. And if, like me, you find yourself wondering during those first chapters where it’s all going, keep going. Some stories aren’t meant to grab you by the hand. Some simply sit beside you until you’re ready to walk with them. This was one of those stories. And I’m so glad I took that walk.
