What’s Your Favorite Thing About Spring?

Happy First Day of Spring!

“Every spring is the only spring — a perpetual astonishment.” ~Ellis Peters

I’m so excited for this day!

Winters in Minnesota can be quite long – with snow on the ground from late October/early November until at least March (sometimes as late as May). While I like Winter, I really enjoy Spring!

The Earth starts turning GREEN again as everything bursts back to life after a long hibernation. I love watching the grass turn from brown to green… to yellow – yellow with all the dandelions that pop up. I enjoy seeing the buds on the trees and watching them unfurl into beautiful green leaves. I love that the daylight hours grow longer and longer and the temperatures get warmer and warmer.

I love to see all the creatures return to our area – the Robins arrived last Friday, followed by the Geese, and Sandhill Cranes. The Mourning Doves are back, and “coo in” every morning. The possums, raccoons, and skunks are crawling out of hibernation, hungry for a meal. Soon we’ll hear the thousands and thousands of frogs singing from our ponds and creeks. I look forward to the return of more song birds, butterflies, moths, and dragonflies.

I love the fresh smell of dirt!

Soon there will be rain and classic thunderstorms. Oh how I miss the sound of thunder and rain showering down!

I’m looking forward to the day the ice goes out on all our lakes and ponds and we have open, running water again. I miss the twinkling of waves on the water, reflecting the sunshine.

Perennials will start to creep out of the rocks and snow, and when it’s warm enough, it will be time to plant all my annuals!

Of course, with warmer weather comes patio parties, nights of stargazing, and walks in the woods with all the new growth.

There are SO many things to LOVE about Spring!

So I’d love to know…

Here’s a view from rural Minnesota on this cloudy, rainy First Day of Spring. If you squint your eyes, you can make out tiny buds on some of the trees. 😉
