A Random Pick for a Summer Reading Challenge – “The Truth About Forever”

As part of a summer reading challenge I created for myself, I needed a book for the “Random Pick” challenge category. When I say random – I mean RANDOM. I literally stood in front of the bookshelf at a thrift store, closed my eyes, reached out, and pulled out a book. That book ended up being “The Truth About Forever” by Sarah Dessen.

When I saw the title of this random pick, I was intrigued. It sounded mysterious and thoughtful and like maybe it was hiding something important inside its pages. I wanted to go into the book blind – without knowing anything about it – so I didn’t read the summary on the back. I just started reading. And what a pleasant surprise! I really enjoyed this book!

This isn’t the usual kind of book I would choose to read, but it completely charmed me. I don’t want to give away too much about the storyline – so you can discover it on your own – but I will say that the story is part coming-of-age, part romance, and part a quiet reminder that growing up often means learning how to trust yourself, open yourself to change, and figure out who you really are.

What I loved most about this book is that it doesn’t rely on giant plot twists or shocking reveals to keep you reading. Instead, you simply get to live alongside the main character through one meaningful summer of her life. You experience the awkwardness, the growth, the friendships, the emotions, and all those little moments that slowly shape a person. There’s something really comforting and immersive about that kind of storytelling.

The characters felt real – the kind of people who feel familiar after a while, like old friends you’ve known longer than just a few hundred pages.

I think this is a feel-good book. The kind that quietly sneaks into your heart and leaves you smiling when you finish it.

For the very first book in my summer reading challenge, I honestly could not have picked a better “Random Pick” if I had tried.  I do recommend this book!
