Flowers, Fruit, and Mediterranean Charm – Bambina Pineapple Guava Shrub

My latest plant discovery – a Bambina Pineapple Guava shrub! And, oh my gosh! I’m in serious love!

I had never heard of this shrub until I stumbled upon it while searching for unique plants to use in containers on our patio. From the moment I saw it, I knew this plant was going to be something special – and it is!

The foliage of this shrub resembles an olive tree – which I also grow (and love). The leaves have that same beautiful silvery-green color and elegant shape, giving the plant a sophisticated Mediterranean feel. The leaves are surprisingly thick and durable – almost plastic-like in texture – which gives the shrub a lush, substantial appearance. The dense foliage creates a full, polished look that instantly makes any space look unique.

I’m using several of these shrubs in terra cotta pots on our Mediterranean-style patio, and they couldn’t be more perfect for the setting! Our patio receives full sun nearly all day, from sunrise until early evening, and these plants seem right at home soaking up the sunshine. They bring exactly the architectural, European-inspired look I was hoping to achieve.

The flowers are another reason I adore this plant. In spring, the shrub produces stunning blooms with bright red centers and delicate white edges – and the long gold-tip stamens are amazing! The flowers are not only beautiful – they’re edible! The petals have a unique flavor that reminds me a bit of cinnamon. I can’t wait to use them as garnishes in cocktails, desserts, and appetizers when entertaining guests.

The pineapple guava shrub produces wonderfully fragrant fruit with a sweet, tropical flavor that feels like a little taste of paradise. It’s such a fun bonus from an already gorgeous ornamental shrub.

While this plant is hardy in USDA Zones 8–10, we’re located in Zone 3b. Fortunately, the Bambina’s compact size makes it an excellent container plant. Since it only grows to about three feet in diameter when planted in the ground, it will remain very manageable in pots for years to come. My plan is to enjoy them outdoors all summer and then bring them indoors during the winter, where they’ll serve as beautiful houseplants until spring returns.

Finding this plant feels like discovering a hidden gem. It’s stylish, versatile, edible, beautiful, and incredibly easy to love. I was excited when I ordered it, but now that I’ve seen it in person and added it into our patio, I’m completely smitten. If you’re looking for a unique shrub that combines beauty, functionality, and year-round interest, the Bambina Pineapple Guava is an absolute winner!

About the Plant

LIGHT

This plant requires full sun – at least 6 hours of direct sunshine. If growing this plant indoors, put it in a south-facing window to maximize sunshine, or use grow-lights during winter months.

WATER AND SOIL

The shrub requires watering one to two times a week, depending on where the plant is located. If growing in containers, like I’m doing, you’ll want to make sure the soil does not dry out completely. Make sure the soil drains well after watering so it doesn’t stay soggy, which can cause root rot.

GROWTH AND HUMIDITY

This shrub grows to about 3 feet wide and 3 feet tall. Because of its small size and evergreen leaves, it works great as a hedge (if you’re planting outdoors), and also works great in containers. If planting in a pot, make sure the pot is large enough to support the growth (I recommend a pot that is at least 14″ diameter). TIP: If planting in a pot, place the pot on a plant dolly to make it easier to move from patio to house in the winter.

Where to Buy

I bought these Bambina Pineapple Guava shrubs online from HomeDepot for $34 each. They really are amazing!
