DIY: Craft a Hanging Basket of Flowers for Your Front Door Decor

Did you know that March is National Craft Month?! Yay!

I am determined to do at least one craft a day throughout the month of March. I love creating and trying new things, so this is going to be a really FUN month!

Today I’m wishing for Spring and making a basket for our front door.

Hanging Basket of Flowers for Your Front Door

It’s been snowing here all day. So far, this is our 8th snowiest Winter on record, and after today, we MIGHT make it to the 7th snowiest. What better day than to craft up front door decor for Spring! Oh, the irony.

I found this cool seagrass basket and apple and plum blossom sprigs. They seemed like a perfect combination. I wasn’t thrilled with the green on the basket, so I painted it black. I also found a black and white ribbon that I really like. I’m not a bow type of gal, so I wrapped the ribbon around the basket and used fabric glue in the back. The ribbon with the black basket accents look nice, and match our service entry decor.

I hung the basket on our door – even though it’s currently snowing. Maybe this will be the Spring talisman we need.

What You Will Need:

What You Do:

  1. Tie or glue a ribbon around your basket for extra flair
If you like bows, tie a bow in the front of your basket. If you don’t like bows, wrap the ribbon around the basket and glue it together with fabric glue. Sewing clips will hold the ribbon together until the glue dries.
  2. Bend the stems of the flowers you want to use so you get the height of the flowers you want in the basket
TIP: I used very long-stemmed flowers. I didn’t want to cut the stems in case I want to use the flowers again for another project, so I just bent the stems and tucked them into the basket. By bending the stems, this also acts as a base to hold the flowers upright in the basket, so you don’t need floral foam or any other ‘stuffing’ in your basket.
  3. Once you have all your flowers arranged the way you like them, it’s time to hang your basket!
Use a metal over-the-door wreath hanger or heavy-duty Command Strips to hang your basket.

Additional Tips:

  • Repurpose for Each Season – Once you find a basket you really like, you can repurpose it for each season. For example, in the Spring, use pussy willows, apple and plum blossoms like I did here, but swap those flowers out for sunflowers, daisies, or poppies in the Summer. In the Fall, you can fill the basket with colorful leaves and branches, and in the Winter, use sprigs of evergreens in your basket. You can also change the ribbon to match the season, if desired. So many possibilities!

I hope you enjoyed this project! Make sure to check back tomorrow to see what I’ll be working on.
