[Must-Visit Website]: Stephen Wilkes Day to Night

Because of the nature of my job, I spend a lot of time online. As a result, I come across some pretty cool websites, and I’d like to share these treasured finds with you.

In this new blog series, Favorite Websites, I’ll post my favorite sites with you, and will give you tips on how you can use these websites. I hope you enjoy!

Favorite Website: Stephen Wilkes Day to Night

Unlike the other websites I’ve featured in this series, this one is just for fun. And for inspiration. And to be amazed. There is no other real purpose to this website, other than marveling at the incredible photography technique created by Stephen Wilkes called Day to Night.

This website includes photos taken using a new innovative technique. Stephen calls his photos “Day to Night”. He creates these photos by sitting in one spot for 24 hours, snapping 1,500 (or more) photographs of that same exact frame. When he has all his photographs – taken during that 24 hour period – he overlays them on top of each other and creates his final image. His photographs are truly amazing! These are not photographs you just quickly look at and move on to the next – instead, they draw you in and you can’t help but look at them for a while. It’s pretty incredible to see all the things that happen in that one spot during the course of 24 hours.

To Use This Website:

Once the website loads, sit back and enjoy the images.

  1. Go to https://stephenwilkes.com/fine-art/day-to-night/
The website will look similar to the image below.
  2. Click on the > arrow on the right of the first photo to scroll through the other photos and prepare to be amazed
  3. When you see a photo you want to zoom in to, click on the photo to enlarge it and then move your mouse to pan over the image – click the photo again to turn off the zoom

Additional Tips and Notes:

  • In addition to the amazing photos on this website, click the Menu option and explore the Timelapses and Behind the Scenes as well (the Drone shots are pretty cool, too).
  • If you like these photographs, I recommend you follow Stephen Wilkes on Instagram for even more awesome photos.
  • Make SURE to watch Stephen Wilkes TED Talk about his photographs. It is truly amazing!
One thing Stephen mentioned in his talk really struck a chord with me. He said “The act of sharing has suddenly become more important than the experience itself.” Think about that. And make sure to watch until the end – the day to night photograph in the Serengeti is sure to move you.

I hope you’ve found this website (and TED Talk) as interesting and enjoyable as I did. Enjoy!

The Serengeti photo (above) is my absolute favorite. Here are a few more of my favorite photos from this website…
