DIY: How to Create Custom Bowls with Oil-Based Sharpies and Dollar Tree Bowls

This project is so much fun to do!

Turn a set of plain white bowls into dishwasher-safe decorator bowls using oil-based Sharpies, Mod Podge and your imagination.

You don’t have to be an artist to create something spectacular. Abstract designs are easy to do and they look great, too. Be creative!

What You Will Need:

What You Do:

  1. Wash and dry the bowls to make sure they are clean.
  2. With your design in mind, use an oil-based Sharpie to draw your design onto the bowl.
TIP: The marker ink takes a few seconds to dry, so be careful not to touch it until it dries. If you do smear the ink, you can use rubbing alcohol and a Q-tip to remove any smudges.

  3. When you’re finished drawing your design on the bowl, let it dry completely for a few minutes.
This bowl was created by a friend of mine.
  4. Use a craft paintbrush and apply one or two thin layers of dishwasher-safe Mod Podge to seal the Sharpie ink.
TIP: Apply a thin layer for the first coat and do not go back and forth over an area, as this might make the ink bleed. Once the first coat of Mod Podge is dry, you can add another coat (or two) without worrying about smudging the ink.
  5. Allow the Mod Podge to completely cure before hand-washing the bowls or putting them in the dishwasher. Mod Podge cures in 28-days.

Additional Notes:

  • Snack Bowls – The finished bowls are perfect for serving snacks at your next get-together – and they look great on a center island or kitchen counter. Fill with pretzels, nuts, dried fruit, and small candies for a fun treat.
  • Vanity Bowls – Create a bowl to use on a bathroom vanity – perfect for holding soaps and other small toiletries.
  • Create Houseplant Pots – Why stop at creating bowls? Use this same technique to create custom designed pots for your houseplants! Any white pot will work. If you use this idea for outdoor patio plants, I recommend using Outdoor Mod Podge instead of the Dishwasher-Safe Mod Podge.
  • Use Painter’s Tape – If you want straight or defined lines in your design, use painter’s tape! Just cut the tape to the length/shape you need, stick to the bowl, and then draw your designs using the tape as your guide. The tape removes easily when your design is done. You could also use painter’s tape to tape a stencil onto the bowl, and use the stencil for your design.
