[House Plant]: Split Rock Succulent – Unique and Unusual Indoor Plants for Your Home Decor

There’s something so peaceful and relaxing about having plants inside your home. I love the look of plants tucked into the corners of a room, displayed on coffee tables and kitchen counters, and gracing bathroom vanities.

Plants help a room feel grounded.

I especially love unique plants. Plants that act as conversation starters, and not something you see everywhere you go.

I’m always on the look-out for unique plants, and with this new series on my blog, I’ll share my latest finds with you. Here’s the latest find…

Split Rock (Pleiospilos Nelii)

While shopping for succulents, this plant immediately caught my eye. When I looked at it more closely, I discovered the name of the plant and knew I had to have this one. It’s called a Split Rock succulent. When we built our current house, we found hundreds of rocks on our property that had been perfectly split into two. Because of all these odd rocks, we named our property “Split Rock Estate”. This plant is perfectly fitting for our house. Plus it looks cool, too!

About the Plant

The Split Rock succulent is native to South Africa. The official name of the plant is Pleiospilos nelii (plee-oh-SPIL-os). This name is a Greek word – “pleios” means “many” and “spilos” means “spot”.

This ancient plant looks a lot like Lithops (living stones), but it is a succulent. The plant has 2 or 4 opposite grey-green leaves that look like they’ve split open.

This plant grows best is full sun and warm temperatures. A south-facing window is the best place to grow this plant. The plant doesn’t need a lot of water, so be careful not to over water. Let the soil dry out completely before watering again and make sure the soil is well-drained.

This plant can grow up to 5″ tall and about 4″ wide. The Split Rock flowers in the Spring with daisy-like orange flowers that smell like coconut. It’s rare, but this plant can grow offshoots from the main plant to form a group.

The Split Rock plant is non-toxic to humans and animals.

Why I Love It

I love that this plant looks like a rock that has been split in two, and the name of the plant makes me smile.

I also really like that the plant is easy to grow, and requires very little maintenance.

Where to Buy

You can buy this plant online on Etsy for $9.85 in a 2″ pot. I bought mine at Lowes for $5.99 each in a 2″ pot (as shown in these photos).
