11 Best Places To Buy Indoor Plants | Houseplants Online – Part 1 (2020)

I admit. I am a crazy plant lady.

love houseplants and have MANY of them.

I love how they look in each of the rooms of our house. The plants make it feel like we’re bringing the outside in to our home.

I especially love being able to care for plants in the Winter months when my outdoor flower gardens are laying 3-4 feet under snow.

I am most drawn to unusual and unique plants – they are the plants I have in our home.

We live in a rural area with very limited shopping near us. Therefore, I buy most of my plants online and have them delivered to me. Friends often ask me where I get my plants, so I thought I’d share my secrets with you.

UPDATE: For even more favorite online shops – check out my “The Best Places to Buy Indoor Plants Online – Part 2” article. I’ll add additional online plant shops in an upcoming “Part 3” – stay tuned!

Where to Buy Indoor Houseplants Online

Many people are surprised that you can order indoor (and outdoor) plants online and have them shipped to you. You might be surprised at just how many nurseries and plant growers sell online. Here are some of my favorite places for houseplants. See below for more details about each place.

  • House Plant Shop
  • The House Plant Nursery
  • American Plant Exchange
  • Pretty in Green
  • SolSucculents1
  • Hirt’s Garden
  • Garden Goods Direct
  • Lowe’s
  • Home Depot
  • Burpee
  • Amazon

TIP: All the plants featured here were available at the time of this article. These plants tend to sell quickly! If you see a plant you like (either featured here or in the shop links below), don’t think about it for too long or you could miss out!

House Plant Shop

The House Plant Shop has some really awesome plants! I’ve ordered from this shop several times and have been extremely happy with how they package plants. They’re located in California and ship throughout the US. I’ve ordered from them this Winter, and purchased a heat pack to make sure the plants didn’t freeze in transit. That heat pack seemed to work very well, along with the careful packaging – I love that I can order plants during the Winter!

Here’s a small sample of the plants you’ll find at the House Plant Shop.

The House Plant Nursery

The House Plant Nursery is another shop on Etsy that has high quality houseplants. I just received my latest order and was very happy with how the plants were packaged. This shop is located in Florida and it’s obvious the owner cares about the plants she ships.

Here’s a sample of the plants you can find at this shop (the first two below are the same variety I just purchased).

American Plant Exchange

The American Plant Exchange on Etsy is another source for fun and unique houseplants. I purchased a Hindu Rope Hoya plant from this shop and was very happy with the size of the plant and the quality of the plant. It was packaged very well and was shipped quickly. I look forward to purchasing from this shop again.

Here’s a quick sample of the plants you can find at this shop.

Pretty in Green

The shop Pretty in Green is another Etsy shop with beautiful houseplants. They are located in California and ship throughout the US. Their selection of house plants changes often, and the plants are large and very healthy. I’m sure you’ll find a few favorites at this shop.

Here is a nice selection from this shop.

SolSucculents1

If you’re looking for succulents, or succulent cuttings, SolSucculents1 on Etsy has a very nice selection.

I purchased a hard-to-find Parachute Plant and several succulents from this shop. They all arrived in excellent condition and were packaged very carefully. This shop is located in California and they ship throughout the US.

Here are a few plants you can find at this shop.

Hirt’s Gardens

Plants from Hirt’s Gardens are available on their website or in their Hirt’s Gardens Etsy shop. They usually have the same prices, the same shipping costs, and the same coupon codes available in both places.

I’ve ordered quite a few plants from them over the years, and have been pleased with each delivery. When I order in the Winter, they always include a heat pack (no charge). They package their plants well so they arrive with little to no damage. They have a large variety at all times, and it seems they add new varieties fairly often. I especially like the rare varieties they have.

Here’s a sample of the plants you’ll find in this shop.

Garden Goods Direct

Garden Goods Direct has their own website. They have a very nice selection of houseplants available, and their prices are very affordable.  In addition to selling houseplants, they also sell (and ship) trees and shrubs.

Here’s a sample of the plants you’ll find at this shop.

Lowe’s

You may have shopped at your local Lowe’s for houseplants, and they have a very nice selection (even in the Winter, in Minnesota), but did you know you can also shop their houseplants online?  They have a large selection available online and the plants arrive in very good condition. Sometimes the plants you can purchase online are a little more expensive than other places, but this is often because the online plants come in pots. Most houseplants purchased online from Lowe’s ship free.

Here’s a selection of some of the plants you can find online at Lowe’s.

Home Depot

Home Depot is another source for affordable, and beautiful, houseplants. In addition to finding houseplants at your local Home Depot, you can also order plants online. I especially like being able to order larger plants online from Home Depot – they are shipped to arrive in excellent condition, and it’s easier to have large plants delivered than trying to haul them home yourself. Most of the houseplants ordered online from Home Depot ship free.

Here are some of my favorites available at Home Depot online.

Burpee

Most likely you’ve heard about Burpee for their seeds and seedlings, but they also sell houseplants! They don’t have a huge selection, but the indoor plants they do have are very nice and are very affordable.

Here’s a selection of some of the house plants you’ll find online at Burpee.

Amazon

I’ve purchased quite a few houseplants from Amazon, and have been really happy with the plants I’ve received. I also really like that you can shop for planters and potting soil at the same time as plants. If you have Amazon Prime, you can find houseplants that ship within 2 days for free. TIP: Many third-party shops sell houseplants on Amazon. Make sure you check comparison prices on these plants. While they may ship free on Amazon, the shipping price is often rolled in to the plant price. If you purchase directly from the shop (not through Amazon), you can sometimes find better prices.

Here are some of my favorites from Amazon.

Additional Online Source for Houseplants

Of course, there are other sources for buying houseplants online. I’ve looked at them, and have thought about ordering, but I’ll be honest – their prices are much higher. Because of that, I’ve been sticking with the sources listed above. But if you’re interested in even more places to buy houseplants online, here are a few additional sources:
